Market Report, 2026-06-12
Stocks hit some turbulence this week, but managed to finish higher, as investors’ focus moved from geopolitics to better than expected consumer inflation data and the highly anticipated SpaceX IPO.
By week’s end, the Dow and S&P 500 were both up about two-thirds of a percent. The NASDAQ 100 gained 2.3%, reversing an earlier decline of roughly 2.5%, with chipmakers driving much of the movement in both directions.
Energy was the only major sector to finish the week lower, as oil prices pulled back sharply from last week’s Iran-related surge as geopolitics continued to send mixed signals. Markets weighed reports of exchanges of fire between U.S. and Iranian military forces against later diplomatic developments that pointed to possible progress. Both sides have reportedly suggested that a deal may be close.
Treasury yields moved lower as tensions eased and inflation data came in softer than expected.
Consumer inflation rose 4.2% from a year ago, partly reflecting last month’s increase in energy prices. But measures that exclude more volatile categories rose just 0.2% for the month, which was below expectations. That could give the Federal Reserve a bit more flexibility, though inflation still bears watching.
Producer inflation told a somewhat different story, rising 6.5% from a year ago in May. The typically steadier portion rose 0.8% for the month. As goods move through the supply chain, we may see those cost pressures show up in consumer prices — or we may see businesses absorb more of the hit through lower profit margins.
And of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention SpaceX’s initial public offering, which lived up to investor expectations. The stock jumped 20% from its IPO price, making Elon Musk the world’s first trillionaire — at least on paper. Investors are split between their faith in Musk and nose-bleed valuations.
That’s it for this week. Adams Wealth Advisors will be back next week with more on what’s driving the markets, including the Federal Reserve’s next interest rate decision. Enjoy your weekend.
