U.S. stocks finished a volatile week with modest gains, as strong AI-related earnings helped offset renewed concern about inflation and Federal Reserve policy. Both the Dow and S&P 500 index ended the week up 0.5%, while the NASDAQ Composite advanced about 0.85%. Friday’s tone turned more cautious after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized that inflation remains too high and reaffirmed the Fed’s commitment to restoring price stability.
Technology was an important source of strength during the week, particularly after Nvidia’s strong earnings and outlook sparked a sharp Thursday rally. That enthusiasm moderated Friday as investors weighed elevated valuations against the possibility of tighter monetary policy. Communication services showed relative strength late in the week, while rate-sensitive and higher-beta areas faced more pressure as expectations for a September rate increase moved higher.
Treasury yields reinforced that shift in expectations. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed roughly 5 basis points Friday to about 4.73%, reflecting increased odds that the Fed will resume rate hikes, if inflation does not show clearer improvement. The mid-week PCE inflation report contributed to that backdrop after coming in slightly hotter than expected, initially pushing yields higher and equity futures lower. The reaction was relatively contained, but the report kept inflation risk and Fed policy firmly in focus heading into Friday.
Next week’s attention shifts toward the labor market, including job openings, private-payroll indicators, and Friday’s employment report. With September Fed policy expectations finely balanced, those releases could materially influence both Treasury yields and equity sentiment.
