U.S. stocks finished mixed Tuesday as strength in technology and semiconductor shares pushed the Nasdaq Composite to another record, while weakness in financials weighed on the Dow. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 185 points, or 0.36%, to 51,864. The S&P 500 was essentially unchanged at 7,765, while the Nasdaq gained 0.45% to 27,244. Much of this divergence is attributable to a sharply flatter Treasury yield curve, which pressured bank shares even as investors continued favoring technology and AI-related companies. Financials were the clearest area of weakness as narrowing spreads between shorter- and longer-term Treasury yields raised concerns about bank profitability and broader financial conditions. Technology remained comparatively resilient, helping offset weakness elsewhere and keeping the S&P 500 near its August record. This continues the recent pattern of relatively concentrated leadership rather than uniformly strong participation across the market. Treasury yields eased slightly as oil prices declined and inflation concerns moderated. The 10-year Treasury yield finished the day at 4.95%. The 5-year yield also moved slightly lower to 4.83%, contributing to the curve dynamics that remained an important influence on financial stocks. Brent crude fell over 1% today, as investors weighed prospects for improved Middle East oil flows and potential U.S.-Iran negotiations. The easing in energy prices provided some relief from recent inflation concerns. Investors will continue monitoring oil, Treasury yields, Federal Reserve commentary and this week’s U.S.-China diplomatic developments for the next directional catalyst.
