U.S. stocks finished Friday higher, capping a positive week as a sharp pullback in oil provided some relief from inflation concerns that had pushed Treasury yields to multi-year highs. For the week, the Dow gained about 0.3%, the Nasdaq advanced 2.1%, and the S&P 500 rose 1.2%. The improvement came as WTI crude oil retreated sharply to about $92 per barrel.

The more consequential development this week was the repricing in the bond market. The 10-year Treasury yield moved above 5.20% on Thursday—its highest level since 2007—after sitting near 4.95% earlier in the week. That is a significant move in a short period of time. It reflected a combination of higher energy-driven inflation risks, surprisingly resilient economic activity, and expectations that the Federal Reserve may need to tighten policy further. Friday’s decline in oil helped yields pull back modestly, but borrowing costs remained historically elevated.

Economic data reinforced that repricing. S&P Global’s September survey showed U.S. business activity accelerating at its fastest pace in more than five years, while hiring increased at the strongest rate in more than four years. Businesses also reported their fastest increase in input costs in nearly four years, partly reflecting higher energy costs and increasingly stretched capacity. Friday’s durable-goods report was also firmer than expected, adding to evidence that demand remains resilient.

Federal Reserve officials also reinforced the idea that stronger growth is becoming more relevant to the inflation outlook. Governor Michael Barr said economic growth remains strong, while inflation risks have increased and labor-market risks have receded. He concluded that further rate hikes will likely be needed.

Next week, the JOLTS report on job openings and labor demand, the August PCE personal income and spending report, and the September employment report on payrolls, unemployment, and wages will be especially important in shaping expectations for further Fed tightening.

That’s it for this week. Adams Wealth Advisors will be back next week to keep you informed about the markets and economy. Have a great weekend.
