The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 132 points to 51,350, while the NASDAQ Composite declined 0.09% to 26,798 and the S&P 500 slipped 0.17% to 7,671. Stocks recovered substantially from their intraday lows as expectations for another immediate Federal Reserve rate increase eased, although uncertainty surrounding inflation and interest rates remained an important influence on sentiment. Performance beneath the major averages was mixed. Strength in semiconductor shares helped cushion the technology-heavy NASDAQ, while consumer-oriented stocks faced greater pressure during portions of the session. Energy stocks also weakened alongside lower oil prices. The divergence across sectors reflected a market increasingly sensitive to interest rates, economic growth expectations, and company-specific developments rather than a broad move away from equities. Treasury yields remained an important consideration for investors. The 10-year Treasury yield rose roughly 1 basis point to approximately 5.25%, keeping borrowing costs elevated and maintaining pressure on rate-sensitive areas of the market. Meanwhile, weaker consumer confidence contributed to some easing in shorter-term rate expectations as investors continued assessing the likely path of Federal Reserve policy. Attention now shifts toward upcoming inflation and employment data. These reports should provide additional insight into underlying price pressures and the strength of the labor market, both of which could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve’s next policy decision. With Treasury yields elevated and markets sensitive to changes in the interest-rate outlook, the incoming data could remain an important driver of market direction.
