U.S. stocks finished modestly higher Thursday after a volatile start to the fourth quarter, with a rally in semiconductor shares and a late retreat in Treasury yields helping the major averages recover from intraday losses. The Dow gained 21 points to 50,927, while the NASDAQ edged up 0.04% to 26,872 and the S&P 500 rose 0.19% to 7,666. The S&P 500 snapped a three-session losing streak as investors lowered expectations for another Federal Reserve rate increase later this month. Technology strengthened as semiconductor stocks rallied following encouraging industry earnings, while Energy was another notable leader as oil prices climbed. The strength was not broad-based, however, with several rate-sensitive and economically exposed groups lagging during portions of the session. Elevated energy prices remain an important consideration because they are contributing to persistent inflation pressures even as they support Energy shares. Treasury yields reversed sharply after initially extending their recent climb. The 10-year yield fell about 6 basis points to 5.23%, after earlier reaching levels not seen since 2002. Shorter maturities also retreated as markets reduced the implied probability of an October Fed increase, providing some relief to equities after higher rates had pressured stocks earlier in the day. Economic releases pointed to continued resilience in manufacturing, construction activity and the labor market, while underlying price pressures remained a concern. That combination keeps investors balancing healthy economic activity against the possibility that persistent inflation could require interest rates to remain elevated. Friday’s September employment report now becomes the primary focus. The report will provide another important reading on labor-market conditions and could influence expectations for the Fed’s October meeting.
