U.S. stocks advanced Tuesday, with the S&P 500 recording its first record close in two months and the NASDAQ Composite also finishing at an all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 253 points, or 0.49%, to close at 51,521. The NASDAQ rose 0.45% to 27,600. And the S&P 500 gained 0.58% to 7,819. Large growth companies remained an important source of strength for the broader market, with technology continuing to lead as investors looked ahead to the approaching third-quarter earnings season. That strength helped push the major indices higher even as longer-term interest rates remained historically elevated. Investors continued to favor companies with strong earnings expectations despite the challenging rate environment. The bond market provided some relief today, with Treasury yields easing modestly from Monday’s multidecade highs. The 10-year Treasury yield declined to 5.29% after reaching its highest level since 2002 during the previous session. The 5-year Treasury yield also saw a modest decline by 3 basis points to 5.04%. That stabilization helped ease some of the pressure that rapidly rising interest rates can place on stock valuations, particularly among growth-oriented companies. With both the S&P 500 and NASDAQ now sitting at record levels, investor attention turns toward the approaching corporate earnings season, along with the next signals on inflation, economic growth, and Federal Reserve policy.
