Stocks finished lower Wednesday after an early selloff driven by another surge in Treasury yields and renewed inflation concerns. The Dow fell 341 points to 51,180, while the NASDAQ Composite declined 0.22% to 27,539 and the S&P 500 lost 0.22% to 7,802. Markets recovered much of their earlier weakness after a well-received Treasury auction pulled longer-term yields back from multidecade highs and oil prices reversed lower. The session showed notable rotation beneath the major averages. Health care led the market higher, while utilities also held up, reflecting demand for more defensive areas. Industrials were the weakest major sector, with materials and real estate also under meaningful pressure. The divergence suggested that investors remained cautious toward economically sensitive and rate-sensitive areas even as the headline indexes stabilized late in the day. Treasury yields ultimately finished flat on the day despite rising sharply earlier in the session. The 5-year yield was unchanged at 5.03%, while the 10-year increased roughly 1 basis point to 5.29% after briefly reaching its highest level since 2002. The reversal helped ease some of the valuation pressure on equities. Brent crude also reversed an earlier advance and settled modestly lower near $100 per barrel, reducing some immediate concern that energy prices would add further inflation pressure. Federal Reserve minutes showed broad support for September’s rate increase, but policymakers did not appear committed to a prolonged series of hikes. Investors will next focus on Thursday’s weekly jobless claims, followed by Friday’s preliminary consumer-sentiment report and additional Federal Reserve commentary.
