Market Report, 2026-10-12

U.S. stocks finished mixed on Monday, October 12, as weakness in technology shares overshadowed gains across most of the broader market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 0.38%, while the NASDAQ Composite and S&P 500 declined modestly by 0.44% and 0.06% respectively. Renewed concerns about the financing and sustainability of artificial intelligence infrastructure spending weighed on semiconductor companies, prompting investors to reassess valuations in a sector that has contributed significantly to recent market gains.

Despite the decline in the S&P 500, market participation was generally positive, with nine of its eleven sectors advancing. Energy led as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and continued uncertainty surrounding Russian oil supplies pushed crude prices higher. Communication services and financials also demonstrated relative strength. Technology experienced the most pronounced weakness, illustrating how losses among heavily weighted companies can pull major indices lower even when most stocks advance.

Treasury markets were closed in observance of Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day, leaving the 5-year and 10-year Treasury yields without new closing levels or daily basis-point changes. The absence of bond trading also reduced an important source of market price discovery ahead of several potentially influential economic releases. Meanwhile, higher oil prices reinforced concerns that persistent energy costs could complicate efforts to bring inflation under control.

Investor attention now turns to third-quarter corporate earnings and a particularly important economic calendar. Major banks begin reporting Tuesday, followed by Wednesday’s Consumer Price Index and Thursday’s Producer Price Index and retail sales reports. Together, these developments should provide greater clarity on inflation, consumer resilience, corporate profitability, and the Federal Reserve’s next policy decision. Adams Wealth Advisors will continue monitoring these developments and their implications for financial markets.
