The NASDAQ Composite led the declines, falling 1.88% to 26,693, while the S&P 500 lost 1.11% to finish at 7,719. The Dow Jones Industrial Average proved more resilient, declining just 49 points to 51,621. The divergence reflected mounting pressure on technology stocks alongside renewed demand for defensive investments. Technology and artificial intelligence-related companies bore the brunt of the selling, as investors questioned whether higher borrowing costs could undermine the economics of substantial AI infrastructure investments. Semiconductor stocks experienced particularly pronounced weakness. Meanwhile, healthcare and consumer staples provided relative strength, with gains in major healthcare companies cushioning the Dow. Financial stocks also faced pressure following disappointing earnings from Bank of America. Treasury markets experienced substantial volatility. Yields initially surged following the inflation report as investors reassessed the likelihood of additional Federal Reserve tightening. However, longer-term yields reversed course as weakness in equities increased demand for government bonds. The reversal suggests investors were balancing persistent inflation concerns against growing uncertainty surrounding technology valuations and corporate borrowing costs. Beyond energy-driven inflation, the report indicated that underlying price pressures were somewhat stronger than anticipated. The Federal Reserve's Beige Book reinforced this concern, describing continued cost pressures alongside generally modest economic growth and cautious consumer spending. Together, these developments complicate the central bank's interest-rate decisions. Attention now turns to Thursday's producer-price inflation report, retail sales, and weekly unemployment claims, followed by Friday's industrial production figures. These releases should provide further insight into inflation pressures and economic resilience.
