U.S. stocks ended this week with mixed results as investors questioned the profitability and financing requirements of artificial intelligence investments. Many of the beneficiaries of the AI trade, particularly semiconductor manufacturers and AI infrastructure companies, posted losses while other stocks posted gains. Concerns about substantial borrowing and uncertain returns on data-center investments weighed on investor sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.67% for the week, closing at 52,002, while the S&P 500 declined 1.95% to 7,659. The NASDAQ Composite fell 4.48% to 26,140, recording its worst weekly performance since June. Treasury yields declined as the flight-to-safety trade outweighed inflation concerns even as expectations for additional Federal Reserve tightening increased. The 5-year Treasury yield fell approximately 13 basis points over the week to 4.89%, while the 10-year yield declined approximately 14 basis points to 5.09%. Economic releases presented a challenging combination of persistent inflation and resilient activity. September consumer inflation showed stronger underlying price pressures than expected, while producer prices rose substantially more than anticipated. Retail sales and industrial production also indicated continued economic resilience. Meanwhile, Brent crude gained approximately 4.8% for the week, settling near $110 per barrel as geopolitical tensions continued to threaten energy supplies. Looking ahead, investors will monitor housing starts, weekly unemployment claims, and preliminary manufacturing and services surveys. Upcoming earnings from major technology and semiconductor companies will also provide further evidence about AI investment spending and profitability.
