U.S. stocks staged a mixed recovery on Monday as investors returned to the artificial intelligence-related companies following last week's sharp selloff. Semiconductor stocks led the rebound, even though concerns about rising borrowing costs and the financing of large-scale AI infrastructure investments remained unresolved. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 36 points to 51,966. The NASDAQ Composite gained 1.11% to close at 26,431, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.41% to 7,691. The recovery was narrowly concentrated, with most other stocks outside of the essential AI names declining. Utilities and real estate were particularly weak, suggesting that rising interest rates continued to pressure rate-sensitive businesses. Treasury yields climbed throughout the session, reversing some of last week's bond-market gains. The 5-year Treasury yield increased approximately 5 basis points to 4.95%, while the 10-year yield rose 4 basis points to 5.14%. As yields climbed, gold prices dipped towards the 4150 mark. Economic data reinforced concerns about the housing market. Homebuilder confidence declined more than expected in October, reaching its lowest level since 2012. Elevated mortgage rates, construction expenses, and weakening buyer traffic continue to constrain housing activity, highlighting the broader economic consequences of persistently high interest rates. Looking ahead, we will monitor housing starts, weekly unemployment claims, and preliminary business activity surveys. Corporate earnings from major technology companies will also provide important evidence about AI investment sustainability and profitability.
