Stocks experienced a wave of selling after one of the tech giants, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, reported earnings. While the results themselves were not significantly disappointing on the surface, with only a minor revenue miss, the underlying details startled the stock market. Significant cannibalization was observed as its core search service missed revenue expectations by $1.55 billion, while its newer AI Mode has yet to pick up the pace in monetization. This has led to fears that AI may continue to drive up costs for software providers without generating significant increases in revenue, which in turn raises questions about the sustainability of future AI infrastructure buildout. The decline was extremely uneven and heavily concentrated in technology. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, an index diversified across many industries, lost only 133 points to 52,343. The NASDAQ, an AI-heavy index, declined by 1.38% to 26,185. The S&P 500 slid 0.3% to 7,720. The technology and communication services sectors led the decline, with losses of 2.61% and 2.07%, respectively. Defensive sectors such as healthcare, real estate, and consumer staples rallied by at least 2%. The bond market rallied as fears in the equity market spilled over. The 5-year U.S. Treasury yield declined by 13 basis points to 4.74%, and the 10-year yield declined by 11 basis points to 4.94%. Today's economic data were a mixed bag. On the one hand, U.S. GDP grew by a stronger-than-expected 3.4%, driven by resilient consumer spending and robust investment. On the other hand, inflation accelerated at its fastest pace in six months, raising the likelihood of monetary tightening.
