Investors focused on earnings from the largest technology companies and growing concerns about the enormous capital expenditures being made toward artificial intelligence. Alphabet, Google's parent company, reported slowing growth in its core search business, while Amazon disappointed with weaker earnings and guidance. Microsoft delivered solid results, but its stock also came under pressure. Investors are increasingly questioning when these massive AI investments will generate sufficient returns. For the week, the Dow declined 0.85% to 51,770. The NASDAQ fell 2% to 25,437, while the S&P 500 posted a more modest decline of 0.57% to 7,580. **But the headline numbers don't tell the whole story.** Communication services declined 5.53%, weighed down by Meta and Google, followed by technology with a 2% loss. Meanwhile, every other sector posted gains. This reflects what we've seen throughout October, with strength across much of the market offsetting weakness in technology and communication services. Energy, consumer staples, and utilities, for example, posted double-digit gains for the month. **That broader strength is consistent with an economy that continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience.** This week's economic reports reinforced that picture. Third-quarter GDP grew at a strong 3.4% annualized rate, accelerating from 2.2% in the second quarter. Importantly, real consumer spending increased 3.8%, highlighting continued strength in household demand. Inflation, however, remains somewhat sticky. The latest report showed annual inflation rising to 3.6%, with core inflation at 3.1%, still above the Federal Reserve's target. Meanwhile, bonds rallied as investors sought safety. The five-year Treasury yield declined nine basis points to 4.72%, while the ten-year yield fell six basis points to 4.93%. Looking ahead, we have the midterm elections and a busy week of economic reports, culminating in Friday's all-important employment report. That's it for this week. Have a great weekend!
