As we reached the final trading day of the week, the market stabilized, potentially calming many investors’ nerves. Needless to say, stocks took a beating over the past week, particularly those of companies that have benefited heavily from the ongoing massive AI infrastructure buildout. The Democratic wave in the midterm elections has introduced additional uncertainty surrounding tax rates and future AI-related capital expenditures. By Friday’s market close, the Dow had lost only 0.94% for the week, thanks to its more defensive composition. The S&P 500 dropped 2.68% to 7,377, while the NASDAQ lost 4.41% of its value. Although the energy sector posted the heaviest loss at 12%, this was largely driven by the potential end of military operations in the Middle East. Technology was the primary driver of the broader market selloff, with the sector losing more than 8% in a single week. The bond market rallied, partially due to a flight to safety but also amid expectations of a more restrained federal budget. Both the U.S. 5-year and 10-year Treasury yields declined by 7 basis points, to 4.65% and 4.86%, respectively. Gold rebounded above the 4,000 mark. One of the biggest sources of support for the market on Friday was the employment report, which showed significantly stronger-than-expected job creation. The unemployment rate fell to 4.1%, even as labor force participation continued to rise. The preliminary consumer survey also delivered a much higher-than-expected reading, prompting investors to reassess whether a severe devaluation of stocks is warranted in the current economic environment. Volatility may extend into next week, with markets potentially swinging in both directions as global investors continue to digest political developments.
